For Mother’s Day 2010, MFA held a special event in Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia, to educate the public about the cruel farming practice of separating mothers from their babies and other mistreatment of mother farm animals and their young. We displayed a large Mother’s Day card that appealed to human mothers to sympathize with the plight of these other mothers. We paired pictures of mother pigs, chickens, cows, and sheep lovingly caring for their babies with pictures of a gestation crate, veal crate, milking machine, hatchery, battery cage, and lamb slaughter. On our large-screen TV we showed Farm Sanctuary’s video on the emotional lives of farm animals. Passers-by helped themselves to literature and samples of vegan food and we had a number of good conversations with people interested in our display.
